Cutting the maze

The cornfield is planted in early May both north-south and east-west to form a dense stand. The original drawing is scanned into a computer by Shawn Stolworthy and the trails are designed into the mazes. When the corn is 10 inches tall, the trails are tilled guided by a Global Positioning System. The bridges are carefully set in place with a large fork lift and the steps and braces are bolted on. In July, most of the trails are tilled again to clean them up. See the following photos.

In May, the trails are laid out into the cornfield. Robert Richardson (left) with Shawn Stolworthy, the maze designer.

Three tractors with rototillers are used to "cut" the trails into the cornfield. Pictured here is Shawn Stolworthy, the maze designer.

Large machinery is used to carefully carry the bridges, stairs, and bracing into the maze and set them in place.
